Prepare for a nerd rant

So I use the Adobe Creative Suite professionally and legally, my company bought my license so I ca do my job but because people were stealing the product (duh) adobe created a solution to do subscriptions only....which is great if you run a small company that doesn’t have an IT department. If that’s not you then you are screwed because your IT department will see the obvious holes and gaps in the creative cloud network and say “nuts to that this”.

The workaround is that adobe will sell companies standalone version to use...but...they wont allow updates on them outside of the cloud you HAVE to have it pushed out through your IT department, what that means is that any tiny update happens in herky jerky motions as some machines are updated before other machines...like remote machines that aren’t physically on location and on network. So the push comes, the software is updated and you do all your work, only to bring it to another workstation with an inferior point release and you are greeted with “sorry chum, this is an old version, you’re shit outta luck”. Okay fine, Im not on the same version, I am sure there is a good reason they aren’t cross compatible, i mean Adobe wouldn’t just throw a wrench in my workflow for no reason right?

Um no. You want to know what the difference is? A version number built into the project file. It literally goes from “=29" to “=30". If the program reads “=30" and you are on “=29" then it wont let you open it. But it couldn’t be as simple as going in and changing it, could it?

Yes

If you go in, change the code to “=1" then it works in all version with no errors.

Thanks guys.

As both a software developer and a photographer with an Adobe creative cloud license, I both understood your situation and felt your frustration

I hate subscription software. It’s a way for companies to increase their revenue stream. I use CS programs, but not enough to make it worth the impact on my limited budget. So, I jumped the Adobe ship long ago. That’s not something you can do in your situation, but I’m grateful that I can. I buy my software from companies that are still small enough to be more responsive to my needs.

You need to spend more time with the likes of Autodesk then rewrite this. It will be 10 page rant filled with the most colorful of expletives.

I used to use Vegas and I really like it, but if you also need photoshop and after effects...well...you’re kinda stuck with adobe.

as my companies entire IT department I try to avoid Adobe products as much as I can.

Too demanding for nothing, Too complicated for nothing.

we do have one licence of CS and It is a Subscription cause I didn’t feel like dealing with the stupid problems you are describing.

I’ve got 99 problems

adobe is about 97 of them.

its certainly not my only complaint, just the most “intentionally evil corporation” one.

You are. I use Pixelmator for image editing and iStudio for layout, but I’m in charge and have that luxury.

The work around is ingenious, perhaps intentional by the software developers.

its hard work to get in there and change it and it only works on PC. I can’t imagine they are happy about me doing it.

I have CS6 personally and its fine, but CC has some BIG improvements for the pro and its hard to go back.

Ah, yes, subscription licenses. Extortion with a smile.

Here’s a beauty of a quote from a company for some licenses that I got for a recent project.

Thank goodness for that discount, eh?

ah you can always tell the value of something they lop most of the cost off and still make a profit.

Yeah... We have programs running on both Autodesk and Adobe software. Both are nightmares.

With the continuing shift in focus from desktop to mobile for many many companies, I think the golden age of personal computing is behind us. Between bullshit practices like subscription licenses and a gradual decline in support for power users, it’s just going downhill from here. Computer literacy is falling and I don’t really see that changing with the coming generation that has grown up using primarily mobile devices rather than traditional computers. Software companies like Adobe and Apple will continue to get away with scummy business practices and the new generation won’t know a difference because they’ve never “owned” software like we used to (yes I know software has always been license-based, but for all intents and purposes you used to own software and did what you liked with it back in the day).

Oh, so you claim to be a pro ?

Which product are you using?

Creative Cloud is only $10/mo, isn’t it?

well it IS my job. I am on CC2017

its $70 a month for the apps needed.

By “product,” I meant, which programs in the suite?

I’m a serious amateur, probably more skilled than some who get paid to use them, and I use Photoshop, InDesign and Lightroom. I’d like to learn Illustrator, but haven’t had the need so far.

I really only use premiere, after effects and photoshop, but even then its $20 an app so it comes out to about the same. I don’t know what we pay.

I regard Adobe pretty lowly. I’m still upset about the stupid prices for CC subscriptions and I’m borderline livid that they dropped the standalone non-cc Lightroom and all support/dev for it even though they have claimed that there would “always” be a non-cc Lightroom.
